Do you think this is not a modern-day problem? The Daily Telegraph reports that Germany is about to reintroduce a ban on bestiality. The nation legalized it in 1969, along with homosexual unions. However, now that animal-rights activists believe sex with animals is harmful to the animals, Germany is going to ban the practice. One man in the story is fearful his female dog will be taken from him.
Sick. I know.
Bestiality is an ancient problem. In fact, it was enough of a problem in Moses’ day that God specifically addressed it in the Law. “Nor shall you mate with any animal, to defile yourself with it. Nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it. It is perversion” (Lev. 18:23). The death penalty was proscribed for violators; both man and beast (Lev. 20:15).
Why is it wrong to have sex with an animal? Simply put, because God said so.
This brings up an issue. What else did God say is wrong regarding sexual behavior? Many things, but we will deal with only three as they are commonly accepted in our society.
Sex Before Marriage
Many people in our society see this as a minor issue. More and more churches do not teach against it. Yet, the Bible says fornication is sinful (Gal. 5:19-21). If sex with animals is wrong, sex before marriage is wrong—the same God spoke about both.
Homosexual behavior is widely overlooked, if not condoned. A segment of our society is vigorously promoting it. Many religious organizations officially condemn it, but little teaching or action is taken against it. God said it is sinful (Rom. 1:26-28). If sex with animals is wrong, homosexuality is wrong—the same God spoke about both.
By far the most commonly accept and practiced sexual immorality is adultery. Sex with someone you are not married to, while you are married, is adultery. This is not the issue as most people still see such as wrong. The problem is people who get divorced for a reason other than fornication and remarry. The second (or third or fourth) marriage is adultery. Who said? Jesus.
And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery (Matt. 19:9).
Countless churches accept people who are living in adultery. Many who claim to be followers of Christ and His teaching accept, condone, or are practicing adultery. If sex with animals is wrong, sex in an unlawful (unbiblical) marriage is wrong—the same God spoke about both.
It should not surprise us where sexual perversions go. Sex with one who is not your lawful spouse. Sex with someone of the same gender. Sex with animals. Sex with children.
Will we see a day when sex with animals is banned because of cruelty to animals, while sex with children is legalized because we live in a godless society? [Note: we are not sure of the legal status of bestiality in all states, but assume most have laws against it already.]
People who believe in God’s word need to insist that teaching is done on sexual immorality—all of it. Churches and preachers who do not speak the truth, including what Jesus said in Matthew 19:9, are not teachers of the gospel. They teach a perverted gospel and should be rejected (Gal. 1:6-9).
