A recent article about the legal recognition of a polygamous marriage in Brazil caught our attention (Putting The ‘Tri’ In Matrimony: Brazil Recognizes Three-Person Civil Union, www.breitbart.com retrieved Aug. 28, 2012). The article states that a notary recognized the union of two women and one man saying, “nothing in Brazilian law prevents” polygamous unions.
It may be Brazilian law does not forbid such, but that is irrelevant. The Law of Christ forbids it. The Bible teaches marriage is between one man and one woman (Gen. 2:24; 1 Cor. 7:2). A deviation from this is a transgression of the law, a sin (1 Jn. 3:4).
Why does this matter to those of us who live in the United States?
For about a decade there has been a strong push to legalize same-sex marriage. It started with the idea that “civil unions” be recognized by courts and companies. As the acceptance of civil unions is spreading, the pressure to enshrine same-sex marriage in law is gaining.
Again, this is a violation of God’s law.
One of the legal, logical arguments against legalized homosexual marriage is if it is accepted, then any form of marriage can and must be recognized: two women and one man, five women and three men, one man and his best mare. If not, why not?
This leads to another recent news event. A famous Hollywood director defended incestuous relations. He said if two siblings do not plan to have children, then why care about them having sex? His philosophy is “love who you want.”
Here is the cold, hard fact: When man pushes God out of his knowledge, he ends up involved in every form of debased behavior. Paul noted this regarding the ancient Gentiles.
Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting (Rom. 1:21-28).
When God’s standard is abandoned, even incest is seen as permissible.
The thing is, people who see incest as repugnant, do not see fornication as bad. Many who would protest polygamy, homosexual marriage, or incestuous relations, readily accept divorce and remarriage for reasons other than what the Lord stated in Matthew 19:9. In other words, they have bought into the devil’s lie and accepted adulterous marriages. They do not see the connection between this and incest being openly, unashamedly being promoted. Again, leaving the word of God leads to more and more degradation (2 Tim. 3:13).
Unless there is a radical change in our nation, not only will same-sex marriage be legalized, but so will polygamy and incest. As those who believe in God’s standard, we must oppose further deviation from it and labor to lead men back to the truth regarding biblical marriage.
