Many people are looking for purpose. It is reported that Millennials want to work somewhere that has “purpose” – some type of do-good, feel-good aspect of the company and its mission. In fact, they are willing to accept lower pay for a job with purpose, than higher pay at a place where there’s little “purpose” or something they connect to.

Okay. Wouldn’t we all like to be engaged in daily work, a way to make a living, where we have a passion? Of course. However, it seems to go deeper than that. It is as though Millennials (and others) are looking for meaning to life in the work they do. They identify with it and seek to be whole through their career.

Here’s the issue with that, man was made for one purpose, and one alone – fellowship with God.

Hear what Solomon said,

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:
Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil.

– Ecclesiastes 12:13, 14, NKJV

He tried to find meaning and purpose in his life in all kinds of things, including work (Ecc. 1 & 2). When he surveyed it all, looked at life and where a man can find fulfillment, he reached the conclusion it is in God alone.

To seek purpose in anything other than God leads to disappointment, frustration, and emptiness.

So, whether it’s the Millennials or anyone else, it’s a mistake to look for purpose in work that will give meaning to your life; that will fulfill you and make you whole. The way to find that completeness is submission to, and fellowship with, God. Then, if you find work you are passionate about, great. If not, you are still content because you are in fellowship with God – the very thing you were created for to start with.
